Course Calendar, ENGL 200, Summer 2013

Readings should be completed BEFORE the class meets on the assigned day so that you are prepared to discuss and participate in activities. You're expected to bring a copy of the assigned reading to class with you, either in print form or on an electronic device, so that you can refer to specific passages in the text. Please consult with Dr. K after the first class if this requirement requires an accommodation for you.

M June 3

Introduction; the basic terms for studying narrative; the nature of detective stories. The differences between print and film stories. To start: most of The Great Mouse Detective.

T June 4

Where detective fiction begins: Poe, Murders in the Rue Morgue and The Purloined Letter . Students should bring these to class, either printed out or on their laptops/tablets. What are the characteristics of the detective? Of detective practice? What will we be looking for? Then we'll discuss S. S.
