What are myths, archetypes, and genres?
Class will be sorted into Houses for group presentation and for House Cup competition.

Outside Reading: from the Introduction to Bruno Bettleheim's The Uses of Enchantment (1977)--Please finish this sometime this week. Take good notes on this, since many of the questions we'll be taking up in class will bounce off these ideas.

July 7:  Quiz.  Should the Harry Potter novels be censored on the basis of literary merit? Outside reading: Bloom, Byatt & Taylor, more Bloom, and Stephen King; ALA "Banned Books" material. Remember: Gryffindors focus on the anti-Harry side; Hufflepuffs focus on the pro-Harry side for class discussion (everybody's responsible for both sides for the quiz and final exam). July 8: Paper Due at the beginning of class--no exceptions. It must also be submitted to www.turnitin.com by this time. 

Last day to win House Cup points.

Finish discussion of censorship and the literary merits of the Harry Potter series.

Last day to submit possible essay questions for the Final Exam.

July 9: Summation, evaluation, exam preparation, feasting (bring milk). The House Cup will be awarded to the group with the collective highest scores on quizzes, tests, and the House Presentations.

July 10: EFT (Excruciating Final Test)

This will consist of IDs (10 pts), short answers (15 pts) and three essay questions (25 pts each). One of the essay questions will be comprehensive; the rest of the exam will focus on material read since the midterm on June 24.
