In this graduate seminar, we will focus on one of the major creative enigmas in the Arthurian literary tradition—Sir Thomas Malory, whoever he was—and the book, or books, or tales, or whatever they are, that he (probably) wrote in the late 1460s. (If that's not post-modern enough for you, you'll have to deal with it. )

Since Malory's version of the legend is the most enduring in Western literature, we'll also look at reinterpretations of his work by his literary descendants, including Tennyson, Morris, White, Heath-Stubbs, and Percy [even though he is American], as well as some cinematic descendants. We will explore a variety of critical perspectives on Malory and the legend, and possibly attempt to determine the airspeed velocity of an unladen European swallow. Requirements are the usual: informed participation, intellectual engagement, various oral and/or short written performances, and a significant culminating piece of writing.
This will count as a "figures" or a British literature course in your Master's program.
