Criminal Justice in Practice

Assignment Rubric

Throughout the semester we will be examining the three branches of the American criminal justice system.  Students will have the opportunity to examine one of these three branches up close.  Students will need to choose between law enforcement, the courts, or corrections.

Students who choose law enforcement will engage in a ride-along with police officers.  Students are responsible for making the arrangements for a ride-along.  The following web sites will help to get you started:

York County Sherriff’s Office:

http://www.yorkcountysheriff.com/PublicServices/RideAlongApplication.aspx

Winthrop University Campus Police:

http://www.winthrop.edu/campuspolice/

Students who choose the courts will be required to sit in on cases at the county court house.  I will arrange for a specific date and inform the class.

Students who choose corrections will be required to go on a tour of a local correctional facility.  I will arrange for a specific date and inform the class.

All students will be required to turn in a three-page, double spaced, typed report examining their own experience within the context of the issues addressed in class and within the textbook.  Students who use and appropriately apply concepts from our class will receive better grades on this paper.  The due date is DECEMBER 1ST in class.
