Prerequisites for NUTR

instructor permission to enroll in NUTR 371. Students will
also need to know how to use WebCT, TURNITIN and Excel for course
deliverables. Students are
discouraged from registering for NUTR 371 prior to attaining junior
status, even if they have completed NUTR 221, NUTR 231/232 during
their first year at Winthrop.
Examinations

curved.
EXAM One is administered during the second class meeting, based upon prerequisites
and counts for 20% of the final course grade.
Bring a
calculator. Students are NOT permitted to use calculator-
features on alternative electronic devices like cell-phones and
IPODs. Students who arrive late will not be permitted to sit for
Exam One.
Students earning transfer credit
for courses equivalent to NUTR 221, NUTR 231/232) are held
accountable for the curricular content of Winthrop's NUTR 221, NUTR
231/232. No private tutorial services are provided to any
student for any reason prior to Examination One.
All exams are comprehensive and
cumulative; expect to be tested on prerequisite course material in
all examinations and across sequential courses. All materials discussed in class, posted on
our WebCT course site, covered in readings, assignments and projects
are "testable". Students are expected to create their own
study guides.
Students earning DPD (didactic program
in dietetics) verification from Winthrop University are responsible
for knowing DPD verification requirements. DPD verification
information is available online and in university catalogues.

materials are distributed via our WebCT course site. Students are required to use
the WebCT assignment drop box, read the WebCT calendar daily, M-F,
know how to open folders and files to access assignment
instructions, track posted grades, upload assignments, and participate in discussions. Electronic
Communication requires daily monitoring of Winthrop email (I use
the class list serve almost daily). Students also need to
activate and use their WINTHROP email addresses. I do NOT respond to
non-Winthrop emails regarding any course matters.
Microsoft products (Microsoft Word
"doc files" & "EXCEL):
Students who have not yet satisfactorily completed Microsoft Excel
(a CSCI course) will be required to demonstrate proficiency with Excel
during the first two weeks of the semester. A 15-minute
proficiency test is explained during the first class meeting.
Typically, students will be required to make (and keep) an
appointment with a graduate assistant (Name TBA) or Dr. Silagyirebovich, and demonstrate proficiency with a prescribed set
of Excel tasks. Students who fail the proficiency test are
required to attend a tutorial class with Dr. Silagyirebovich; the
tutorial class is typically held either on a Friday afternoon or a
Saturday morning (8 AM) at Dr. Silagyirebovich's convenience. In
NUTR 471, students also must be able to create, open, work with
Power Point files. EMAIL: Students are required to
activate and use ONLY their Winthrop email addresses. Dr. Silagyirebovich
does not respond to course inquiries from
non-Winthrop email addresses. Assignments submitted from
non-Winthrop email addresses will not be graded. WebCT:
NUTR 371 is a WebCT-enhanced course.
All course materials (syllabus, assignment instructions, rubrics,
templates, course calendar, etc.) are communicated electronically
using WebCT. Names of registered students will be uploaded into our
WebCT course site the first day of the academic term. Students are
required to activate their Winthrop email accounts in order to have
their names uploaded into our WebCT course site. Student passwords will be distributed
during the first class meeting. NOTE: Students may NOT use
Microsoft WORKS (wps extension) for word-processed files.
CALCULATORS are used in NUTR 371 classes and examinations; each
student must bring her/his own calculator, no sharing. DATABASES:
students will need to be able to use Food Processor (learned in
NUTR 321/322), (http://www.USDA.GOV ).
TURNITIN: Instructions for
adding NUTR 371 to YOUR WINTHROP TURNITIN account will be
disseminated in class.
Fall 2008 textbook for NUTR 371
11th edition Introduction to
Foodservice by Payne-Palacio and Theis, Prentice Hall Publication
In addition, students are expected to
own a basic human nutrition textbook (any of the textbooks used by
faculty teaching NUTR 221 are fine) and a basic food composition
(fundamentals of food chemistry) textbook (such as the textbooks
used in NUTR 231).
Syllabus: copies of NUTR 371
syllabi from past years are on file in Room 302, Department of Human
Nutrition. NO copies are distributed electronically. Students may contact the
administrative specialist to arrange a time to come into the
office and preview a copy of an old syllabus. The course
syllabus changes from one year to the next but old syllabi are
indicators of the type of work students produce in the
course.
