English 620: Directed Reading
Studying "The Master":
The Writings of Henry James

Course Goals: This directed reading will explore the biography of Henry James as well as trace several key works throughout the novelist's career.  We will pay particular attention to the development of his writing style, his portrayal of female characters, and his depiction of psychological realities.  In addition, we will explore how the novels' themes connect to Realism/Naturalism in American literature as well as note how his techniques distinguish James as a writer of fiction.
Goals:
Goals for all courses in the Department of English, including those that meet requirements for NCATE certification, are described at http://www.winthrop.edu/english/goals.htm.

Course Format: We will meet weekly to discuss the assigned text.  To allow for flexibility, the reading schedule listed below should be read in terms of "week of Jan 14," "Week of Jan 21," etc.  For each meeting, the student should be prepared to lead the discussion on the particular piece. (20%) In addition, the student will need to complete the following:

-four 3-5 page critical papers by Spring Break.  These should focus on a particular question/issue in one text and present an argumentative thesis that is supported through detailed textual support. These do not require outside research.  These can certainly lead into the longer paper.  (40%; 10% each)

-one 10-12 page critical paper that incorporates at least 5 secondary scholarly sources. (30%)

-presentations of each paper during the meetings

-complete a final exam (10%)

Absences:
Because of the unique nature of this course, participation is required throughout the semester. We need to meet at least once a week.  Failure to attend 2 meetings will result in a failing grade in the course.

Late Work: No late work will be accepted.  (Depending upon the severity of the situation and the nature of the documentation provided, this late policy may be adjusted.)

Contacting Your Instructor: I check my voice mail and email each weekday.  (I do not check them usually on the weekend.)  You can also leave messages for me in the

department mailroom, 248 Bancroft, which is open from 8:30-5:00 each day.

Honor Policy: Students are expected to handle borrowed material appropriately and follow MLA documentation style.  Please consult the English Department’s The Correct Use of Borrowed Information if you have questions.  I’d also be happy to work with you individually.

Duplicate Submission of Papers: You may not submit a paper for a grade in this class that already has been (or will be) submitted for a grade in another course, unless you obtain the explicit written permission of me and the other instructor involved in advance.
