Red Clay Saxophone Quartet to premiere new work by Parks During Spring '08 Residency
|
Ron will be writing a new work for the Red Clay Saxophone Quartet. The Red Clay will be in residence at Winthrop University in the spring of 2008, during which time they will premiere Ron's new work which they commissioned. The Red Clay Saxophone Quartet is based in Greensboro, North Carolina and includes Susan Fancher, Robert Faub, Steve Stusek, and Mark Engebretson. The group was formed in October, 2003 and concertizes regularly nationally. Regarding the project Ron adds "What a wonderful opportunity! The Red Clay is a wonderful group and I am fortunate to have the opportunity to write for them. I am excited about their residency here at Winthrop University. They perform a rich and diverse array of music, all with conviction and an exemplary professionalism."

Fractures selected for the 2007 International Computer Music Conference and CD

Ron's 4-channel computer rendered audio work 'Fractures' was selected for inclusion on the 2007 International Computer Music Conference held August, 2007 in Copenhagen, Denmark. In addition, 'Fractures' was included on the 2007 ICMC CD.

Flare, premiered by the Winthrop/Carolinas Wind Orchestra in Spain, October 2007
|
Flare, for Wind Orchestra, was premiered by the Winthrop Carolinas Wind Orchestra during their visit to Malgrat del Mar, Spain in October 2007 with subsequent performances at Navarcles, Spain. Ron wrote Flare for Dr. William F. Malambri, Jr. and the Winthrop Carolinas Wind Orchestra to commemorate that group's participation in the 2007 Malgrat de Mar International Music Festival.
Flare, a brief fanfare, was composed specifically as the opening work of the Winthrop/Carolinas concerts at the Malgrat de Mar International Music Festival. Dr. William Malambri conducts the Winthrop/Carolinas Wind Symphony and was instrumental in organizing the trip to Spain. Ron adds "I am very excited about this project. I have always wanted to write for wind orchestra and the Winthrop Carolinas Wind Orchestra is among the finest groups of their kind internationally. I was honored to provide them with a work for the opening of their concert in Spain and our trip to Spain was a wonderful experience."

Charlotte Civic Orchestra to premiere Wavelength in May 2008

Ron's latest orchestral work "Wavelength" is scheduled for premiere on May 4, 2008 by the Charlotte Civic Orchestra with Geoff Whitehead conducting. Yamamoto is the conductor of the Charlotte Civic Orchestra. This is the second work that Ron has written for the Charlotte Civic Orchestra. He adds "I am grateful to the CCO members and board for their unwavering support of new music and for what they bring to the Charlotte area."
The work, which Parks will write during the fall of 200, will be approximately 15 min. single movement work and will be written specifically for the Charlotte Civic Orchestra on the occasion of their 2007-08 concert season. Anacoustic Zones premiered at the 16th Annual FEMF

Ron's latest computer rendered addio work Anacoustic Zones was premiered at the 16th Annual Florida Electroacoustic Music Festival at the University of Florida, in April, 2007. FEMF has grown into one of th largest and most important festivals of its kind since its inception in the early 1990's. This is due in large part to the leadership and vision of its director, Dr. James Paul Sain.

Charlotte Civic Orchestra premieres Torque in November 2006

Ron's latest orchestral work "Torque" was premiered on November 12, 2006 by the Charlotte Civic Orchestra with Alan Yamamoto conducting. Yamamoto is the resident conductor of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra. Ron adds "This is a wonderful opportunity and I am very excited to have an opportunity to write for the CCO and work with Mr. Yamamoto. I am grateful to the CCO members and board for their unwavering support of new music and for what they bring to the Charlotte area."
The work, which Parks wrote during the summer of 2006, is approximately 10 min. long and was written specifically for the Charlotte Civic Orchestra on the occasion of their November 2006 concert. Sul C SELECTED FOR INCLUSION ON THE 60X60 PROJECT

Ronald Keith Parks second sixty-second 'signature' electroacoustic composition Sul C was selected for inclusion on the 2006 International 60X60 CD and concert project in New York. For more information visit the Vox Novus site by clicking on the 60X60 icon above. The description below is from the Vox Novus web site...
60x60 is a concert containing 60 compositions from 60 different composers, with each composition being 60 seconds or less in duration. These 60 recorded pieces are performed in succession without pause, one after another, creating a 1 hour concert. The performance is played in conjunction with a synchronized analog clock. At the top of each minute in the hour, the domain of space for the composer has begun. Composers who have written works less than 60 seconds are strategically and artistically placed within that minute; the remainder of the minute is filled with silence until the next minute begins.
The project is promoted through a series of concert presentations around the world. The project will be presented at various cities and venues throughout 2007. See the 60X60 web site for details.
Regarding Sul C, Ron writes: "Sul C is the second ‘signature piece’ I have written for the 60x60 project. It is make up of sounds derived from a single source, the C string of a cello. Those sounds are processed and transformed through an array of digital audio editing and transformation techniques."

...drift... for piano commissioned by Forces of Nature

The Forces of Nature program has commissioned a new solo piano composition from Ron. The new work entitled ...drift... was premiered by pianist Tomoko Deguchi on September, 2006 and received several subsequent performances including Tomoko's October 2006 piano recital. Forces of Nature is a unique program dedicated to promoting the work of visual artists that integrate nature and natural formations into art. This year FON invited several artists from Japan to speak, create, and exhibit work in the Carolinas. Ron's 4-channel digital audio work Fractures was included in the 2006 Society of Composers Inc. National Conference which was held in San Antonio Texas in September, 2006. The concert took place at the University of Texas at San Antonio's recital hall on Saturday, September 16 at 7:30 p.m.
Selection for inclusion in the conferences is juried. Ron also serves on the Executive Committee for SCI. This year's SCI National Conference was held in conjunction with the College Music Society's National meeting in San Antonio. CINCINNATI BASED NEXT ENS PERFORMS AFTERIMAGE 7 AT THE 2006 ICMC

Ronald Keith Parks latest addition to his Afterimage series, Afterimage 7, was premiered by the Cincinnati Conservatory-based NeXT Ens on April 17, 2006 at the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, OH. The premiere of Afterimage 7 (for piano, flute, violin, cello, and percussion with computer processing) took place at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music on April 17, 2006. Subsequent performances of Afterimage 7 occurred on April 21, 2006 at St. Cloud, MN, and April 22 at The University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. The NeXT Ens also performed Afterimage 7 at the International Computer Music Conference which was held in New Orleans in November, 2006 at Tulane University. Dr. Parks also present a poster session on his MaxMSP based spectral filtering techniques at ICMC.

NeXT Ens, created by Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music students in October 2003, is dedicated to performing new works of interactive acoustic and computer music. In less than two years, its acclaimed performances at festivals and conferences have already established NeXT Ens as a rising star in the new music scene.
Led by director/pianist Shiau-uen Ding, the members of NeXT Ens include percussionist Heather Brown, cellist Kaylie Duncan, violinist Timothy O'Neill, technical expert Margaret Schedel, and flutist Carlos Velez. The group actively seeks out new works by both new and established composers, and encourages experimental works which explore new ways for computers and electronic instruments to interact with acoustic instruments in live performance.
Parks adds... "I am very excited about this opportunity. It is a great pleasure and privilege to write for one of the hottest young ensembles performing interactive computer music today. The NeXT Ens is among the finest performing groups in the country and I am fortunate to have the chance to write for them. Ronald Keith Parks latest multi-channel electroacoustic composition Click... was premiered in April at the 15th annual meeting of the Florida Electroacoustic Music Festival (FEMF). Like many of Parks electroacoustic and interactive works, Click... was written specifically for FEMF. The premiere took place on the Friday night concert which included works by Larry Austin, Rob Mackay, Benjamin Broening, Andrew May, Jeff Stolet, and Tae Hong Park. This year's composer in residence was the legendary John Chowning, composer and father of FM synthesis. The Festival also featured a concert of works from the University of Birmingham (England) curated by Jonty Harrison and a concert of works from Oberlin Conservatory curated by Tom Lopez.
Click... was also selected for for inclusion on the 2006 Electronic Music Midwest Festival to be held at Lewis University near Chicago. EMM is a thriving festival bringing together composers, performers, and advocates of electronic music from around the world.

Regarding non divisi, Parks writes: "non divisi is a ‘signature piece’ written for the 60x60 project. A pizzicato drone establishes a foreground against which a spectrally evolving arco gesture is explored. The sound world teeters between pitch and noise and tends toward complex spectra containing aspects of both the original arco cello sample and the processed sounds. Technically, the work features cello samples convolved against bowed cymbal sounds and altered via spectral accumulation and evaporation. non divisi was realized at the Winthrop University Computer Music Studio."

Ronald Keith Parks recently learned that the board of the American Composers Alliance voted to approve his membership is their organization. American Composers Alliance provides a wealth of services to members including publication of member works under the American Composers Edition imprint. RON COMPLETES HIS AARON COPLAND HOUSE AWARD RESIDENCY
|
Ron completed his Aaron Copland House residency in August 2005. While in residence at the house he composed Fantasy for Two Pianos which was premiered by the Bradner-Deguchi Piano Duo in November 2005. He also wrote several new Test Pieces for Piano and stared work on Instances, a large work for piano and chamber wind ensemble.
