Out of Bounds Ensemble Premieres "Things Get Out of Hand", A New Piano Trio by Composer Ronald Keith Parks |
The Charlotte NC area's premiere new music ensemble, the Out of Bounds Ensemble, recently premiered a new piano trio by composer Ronald Keith Parks as part of the 2008-09 concert season. The trio is titled "Things Get Out of Hand" and was written for three of the core members of the ensemble; Judy Meister - violin, Nick Lampo - cello, and Tomoko Deguchi - piano. Parks describes Things Get Out of Hand as a five-movement work for piano trio that continues his exploration of a style he refers to as 'contemporary fusion'. Drawing on influences and music from his diverse past, Parks says that Things Get Out of Hand exhibit evidence of his love of jazz-fusion and post-minimalism. The work is approximately twenty minutes in length. Parks is a native of North Carolina and is currently an Associate Professor of Music Composition at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC. The new work was presented on two concerts by the Out of Bounds Ensemble, the first at Barnes Recital Hall at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC at 7:30 p.m. on April 18, 2009 and the second at Tate Recital Hall at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, NC on April 25, 2009 at 4:00 p.m.. Things Get Out of Hand will be published by American Composers Editions in New York City later this year.
The Out of Bounds Ensemble was formed by Winthrop University pianist and music theorist Tomoko Deguchi. The founding members (Tomoko Deguchi, Craig Bove, Ronald Keith Parks, Leonard Mark Lewis, and Geoff Whitehead) say that they formed the ensemble in order to bring both established and new contemporary music to a wider audience in the Charlotte area. The ensemble holds residencies in both Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC and Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, NC. They have been joined by Charlotte area musicians Amy Orsinger-Whitehead - flute, Reese Mancaux - clarinet, and Lorraine Gorrell - voice in recent concerts and for the 2008-09 concert season. For further information on the Out of Bounds Ensemble and for ticket information please contact Tomoko Deguchi at deguchit@winthrop.edu or 803 323-2602, or visit the Out of Bounds Ensemble web site at http://www.birdnest.org/parksr/OBE/index.html |
