What does an acquisitions librarian do? In
a nutshell, a mix of multilingual researching, purchasing, design of
book-approval plans (automatic curriculum-driven book-buying profiles),
accounting, curriculum analysis, product research & analysis, data
analysis & programming... In many ways, the tasks are very similar to
running a small international business.
Globalization is definitely at home in library
acquisitions: E-business abounds, whether it is form of ordering from
overseas vendors via web or e-mail or business-to-business library-system-driven
electronic ordering from our major vendors. Academic libraries support a
wide variety of programs, thus many specialized titles are needed in support of
each knowledge area represented on campus. Especially with language
studies, literatures from around the world in the original languages, regional
area studies, materials can be needed from all over the world!
