Caple, "One nation under a Jersey"

According to the results reported in the Sports Nation survey of 40,000 sports fans by ESPN.com, what are the 4 things that sports fans say they do at home while watching sports?In this article, it tells percentages of responses to questions that 40,000 sports fans answered yes or no to.  Why do you think 51% of them skip school or work to go to a game and what kind of lesson is that teaching the younger generations of sports fans?

 Why does Caple think that the numbers of people having sex at sporting events is skewed by false numbers? If so why?  What is another reason to challenge these results discussed in class.

Name 4 of the 6 athletes (and technique)  in which the article was focused on?   What are the implications of this article for role of play in modern sport?

Why do you think that despite the successes of many of the discussed techniques used by these athletes they are not still used today? List three additional techniques used previously in sports that not used today.

A league of their Own: Cooper. 

 In Cooper’s, A League of Their Own, it is stated that “Bowling is the most democratic of sports,” and “In no other organized sport is the line between amateur and pro so blurred.”  First, list and give a brief explanation of each paradigm that has been studied.  Second, explain how a Functional Theorist would say that bowling’s existence is beneficial for people in society.  Use the given quotations from the article to help support your answer. sb

List the two components of “The Technological Revolution and Sport.” Then tell how those two components affected society and the way it dealt with sport. Include any information from the lecture or the reading. (pages 23-25) ah

Today, sports are shared by all levels of society, without a stigma of race, color or  socio-economic status. Back  at the turn of the nineteenth century sports were primarily entertained by the wealthy elite (upper) class. List at least five sports of the elite class. (Pg. 27-28, Eitzen & Sage) Choose one sport from above and briefly explain how that sport grew to branch out to other levels of society (middle class, working class, poor). Also note which class is currently the most involved class  with that sport in your opinion. (Pg. 27-28, Eitzen and Sage). rc

The primary goal of sports competition is to win.  List 5 ways that coaches instill character traits they believe will bring the team success Do you believe it is a better technique to use the positive character traits listed above to get the most out of a team or should the coach  instill discipline to win his sport? mb

List the major goals that sociology of sport tries to understand ? How is sport linked to the major spheres of social life in contemporary society? tf

 The psychology of sport and sociology of sport are two completely different concepts. The psychological approach deals with the individual, list 3 points of emphasis or concerns from the sociological approach.   Do you think it is a valid statement that the sociological perspective is not concerned with the individual, but only the institution as a whole? Why or why not?  Page 102

 Lewis, "Coach Fitz's Management Theory"

List two functions and dysfunctions of a strict and diverse coaching method like Coach Fitz's. Why might one of the dysfunctions be viewed as such by a current player or parent but a postive function to Coach Fitz or the author? (pgs 124-32 in packet). hr
