PAPER 1:  AN AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL ESSAY

Please follow the guidelines for  writing an autobiographical essay on page 55 in your book.  Once you’ve selected a topic you feel comfortable “going public” with, remember to do lots of brainstorming to recall the important concrete details that will put the reader in your experience.  Also, pay close attention to the advice in your book, pages 55-67, that will give you support in writing this assignment.  When you've completed a draft of the paper, you are ready to create a six word memoir (as noted on the web site www.smithmag.net,) that will be the title of the essay, a title that encompasses the significance of your autobiography.

I will be especially looking for a vivid essay that does convey autobiographical significance.  Remember you must write about an event or person that will offer value to a reader.  I will be closely looking for your incorporation of concrete details (sight, sound, taste, touch and smell imagery) that are not clichés or over-used details.  I will also be looking for strong verbs that help lift your sentences into action.

Don't forger these important features of the autobiographical essay:

      --narrate the event or anecdotes

     --present people

     --present places, and

     --convey autobiographical significance

Length:           3-4 pages typed, MLA format.

Due Date:    Tuesday, Sept. 30 —final draft due in a folder along with all drafts and brainstorming associated with this assignment.

You must also submit your final draft by class time of the due date to turnitin.com!  Don't forget or I can't grade your paper.

Your class ID and password for turnitin submissions are listed on the main page for WRIT 101 on my website.
