Midterm Exam Guidelines

 

Remember, the first part of the test will consist of matching terms with their definitions.  The second part will be giving an example from our readings for each term and briefly explain why or how it is an example of that term.

 

 

ESSAY GUIDELINES:

 

1.  Out-of-class essay prompt:  to be turned in at the exam time next Wednesday, October 20, typed, MLA format.

length--2-3 pages.

Question:  Describe first Heathcliff, and then Rochester as Byronic heroes.  Next, compare and contrast their Byronic traits.  What conclusions can you draw from your comparison/contrast analysis?  Be sure to support your analysis with specific quotes, paraphrase, or summaries from the novels.

 

 

In-class essay prompts:   please prepare both essay  prompts before exam time, Wednesday, October 20, and I will  assign one for you to complete in-class.

You may not bring notes to class, but must come prepared to answer either one in class.

 

1.  Discuss the Gothic elements in Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre.  Be sure to include how weather affects the Gothic mood in both novels. Next, show how similarly as well as differently the Gothic elements are employed in the novels.  What conclusions can you draw from your analysis?

 

2.  Compare and contrast Catherine Earnshaw and Jane Eyre, discussing  their Byronic traits, as well as the choices they made in relation to their social standing and their relationships.
