T	Jan 13	Introduction. What is critical thinking?
R	Jan 15	Over-view of critical thinking. Read: Nosich, "To the Student." and Nosich, pp. 1-16.
T	Jan 20	Nosich, pp. 17-26. Review Impediments. Read essay, "This is Water," posted on the website. Please print out the essay, annotate it, and bring it to class. Assignment for the next few weeks: complete an impediment log by choosing one impediment per week to notice in your life and around you for the next few weeks. Jot down what you notice. We will share these in class on Tuesday, Feb 10, and Feb 17, and I may pick up your writing as well. So, for a few weeks you will focus on and observe one impediment for one week and another impediment for the second week, and fill out an impediment check sheet for each week, citing five specific examples for each impediment. All examples must come from the time period of observation.
R	Jan 22	Read closely the last part of Chapter 1, beginning on page 28 with "The Experience of Learning to Think Things Through." Pay close attention to the SEE-I process of becoming clearer about a concept. SEE-I is a tool that helps with clarity and understanding. Read until the end of the section--page 34. Then write an SEE-I for the concept of "unreflective thinking." For the last part of the SEE-I, the illustration, please create an analogy, simile ,or metaphor: make a comparison in words. Do not draw an illustration, but write one. Be prepared to share your SEE-I in class.
T	Jan 27	Read Chapter 2, pp. 47-77--the Circle of Elements Complete grey box, p. 60, but choose only one of the first four elements to write out an SEE-I. Watch short film--Blink.
R	Jan 29	Complete exercises 2.6, p. 80; 2.9, p. 81. Be prepared to share your assignments with class. Bring element analysis of short film watched in class--Blink--to class Paper 1 assignment given.
T	Feb 3	No class, but attend either a talk by Alaskan poet Derick Burleson on Thursday, Feb. 5, fromn 11:00 Am-12:00 Pm in Owens 101, or attend his poetry reading later on Feb. 5 in the Little Chapel, 7:00-8:00 PM, for extra credit. Both events have GLI and Cultural Evetns Credit.
