January 11:  Introduction to the course and to each other;  brief discussion of myth; segments of Bill Moyers’ interviews with Joseph Campbell; find definitions of myth to discuss next time.

 

18    Discussion of Joseph Campbell and myth.  Guest speaker Henry Berne, Jungian psychologist and poet.

 

25   Showing of Babette’s Feast; Begin reading Art and Physics and continue at your own pace until the discussion late in the semester. Read first half of Stevens’ Private Myths.

 

February 1   Discussion of Babette’s Feast and its relationship to the areas we will explore in the course.  Assignment from Creators on Creating (TBA).

 

8        Discussion of essays in Creators on Creating.  Guest speaker Joana Wardell, painter and Jennifer Halls, intuitive healer and artist.   Assignment:  Read second half of Private Myths.

 

15      Discussion of Private Myths; Read first half of A General Theory of Love.  Guest speaker Scott Ely, fiction writer

 

22      Guest speakers Dottie Moore (fabric artist) and Alf Ward (painter).  Assignment: Finish reading A General Theory of Love.

 

March 1   Mid-term exam.  Assignment:  read three interviews of your choosing (or more)  from Parting the Curtains.

 

8  Guest Speaker Dannye Powell, interviewer and author of Parting the Curtains, Columnist at The Charlotte Observer, and poet.

 

12-18  Spring Break

 

22      Guest speakers poets Julie Suk, Lucinda Grey, Dede Wilson.  Assignment:  be ready to discuss Art and Physics.

 

29  Discussion of Art and Physics; guest speaker Tom Moore, Winthrop Vice President for Academic Affairs, formerly chair of chemistry department and director of MLA program.
