MATH 105

Calculus for the Managerial and Life Sciences

Homework Problems

The problems are from the course textbook, which is listed in the class syllabus.  Answer all questions with supporting work and full justification.  Answers alone are insufficient.  Always be sure to demonstrate the techniques taught in class.  You are encouraged to use technology where appropriate -- this "appropriateness" will be discussed during class.

1.1 5,19,23,29,31,33,39
1.2 5,9,11,19,21,25,27,41,43

For 5-21, sketching the graphs is optional.  Algebraically determine and list intercepts and intersections, and use a graph to check, if you wish.

1.3 3,5,13,15,21,31

For 13 and 15, sketching is optional.

1.5 15,17,19,23,41,43,45,47

For 41:  Estimate the limit with an appropriate table.

  Homework Quiz 1, June 9 (1.5 only)
1.5 27-35 (odd),55
1.6 11,23,27,35,37,39,41,47ac
  Homework Quiz 2, June 10 (1.5, 1.6)
2.1 11,13,15,17,19,21,23,27,39

For all problems, use the definition of the derivative as discussed in class.

For 11-21, merely find the derivative at the specified value.

For 27:  See page 101 for rate of change descriptions.  Also, #23 describes the techniques you should use.

  Homework Quiz 3, June 11 (2.1)
2.2 1,5,9,13,19,25,41,47,49
2.3 3,9,17,19,33,41,43,49

#43:  You should simplify as mentioned in the problem instructions.

  Exam 1*, June 15 (1.5-6,2.1-3)

*  Bring your own calculator (no cell phones or borrowing) and a pencil/eraser.  The exam will be closed notes, closed text, etc.  Contact me with questions.

2.4 1-11 (odd), 19,25,27,29,31,57,59

This homework is tentative, dependent upon Tuesday's class.
2.6 1-9 (odd)
  Homework Quiz 4, June 17 (2.4,2.6)
2.6 17-25(odd),37,38,43,44,47,48

For 21-25, merely compute the value of dy/dx at the specified point.

  Homework Quiz 5, June 18 (2.6)
3.1 11,15,17,25,31,33

For all problems, just determine the location of the critical values.
3.4 1-9 (odd)
  Homework Quiz 6, June 22 (3.1, 3.4)
Extra Credit Quiz, June 22 (Exam 1)
3.1 11,15,17,25,31,33,59bc,61a

  Exam 2, Tuesday, June 23 (2.4,2.6,3.1,3.2,3.4)

I'll be available for questions June 22, Owens 201, 6 - 7:30p.

3.1 (optimization)
57,59bc

For 57, sketching is optional.

3.2 (optimization)
55,59b

For 55, note you need to maximize a rate, i.e. maximize the first derivative of the function Q.

3.4 (optimization)
17,19

For both problems, merely find q that maximizes the profit function P(q), as defined in Example 3.4.5 on page 241 (and in class).
