Additional Information: The English Department’s home page is http://www.winthrop.edu/english.  Resources for many of our courses can be found at http://www.winthrop.edu/english/core.htm.
Plagiarism Policy: Plagiarism is the use of someone else’s thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")–whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. It is a theft of intellectual property and will not be tolerated, whether intentional or not. It is also a violation of section V, "Academic Misconduct," under the Winthrop Student Conduct Code (http://www.winthrop.edu/studentaffairs/Judicial/judcode.htm). The English Department has prepared The Correct Use of Borrowed Information to explain plagiarism (see www.winthrop.edu/english/plagiarism.htm .) You will be required to print out this statement, sign the last page, and bring it to class when required by your instructor. Ignorance or failure to consult this material is no excuse.
Duplicate Submission of Papers: You may not submit a paper for a grade in this class that already has been (or will be) submitted for a grade in another course, unless you obtain the explicit written permission of me and the other instructor involved in advance. This is to conform to the Student Code of Conduct, §V, which states: "Academic misconduct includes but is not limited to … presenting the same or substantially the same papers or projects in two or more courses without the explicit permission of the professors involved." (Student Code of Conduct §V: http://www.winthrop.edu/studentaffairs/Judicial/judcode.htm )
Students with Disabilities: If you have a disability and need classroom accommodations, please contact Gena Smith, Coordinator, Services for Students with Disabilities, at 323-3290 (or ext. 3290 from campus), as soon as possible. Once you have your professor notification letter, please notify me so that I am aware of your accommodations well before the first graded assignment for which you wish accommodation.
Contacting Your Instructor: My e-mail address and phone number are above; they are the best way to reach me. You may call me at home before 10 pm at 803-817-7854 if it's an emergency. You can leave messages for me in the department mailroom, 248 Bancroft, which is open from 8:30-5:00 each day.
Attendance Policy: The official Winthrop University Attendance Policy and Final Examination policies are listed on page 30 of the Winthrop University Undergraduate Catalog 2004-2005. You are expected to abide by them. If you accumulate 4 or more absences in this class, I will begin deducting points from your final average (3 per absence, beginning with the 4th). If you accumulate 7 or more absences, by university policy you fail the course. Two tardies count as one absence.
Late Paper/Assignment Policy: You may submit one paper in the course one class period late, without explanation, as long as you notify me at least 24 hours in advance that you are taking your extension. Otherwise, unless you have a Dean's excuse, assignments will only be accepted in class on the day due.
Final Examination Schedule: The final examination schedule for this semester is posted at http://www.winthrop.edu/recandreg/pdf/exams/F04sched.pdf.  Winthrop University policy states that travel or work schedules are not valid reasons for missing or rescheduling a final examination.
Other Policies: We will use www.turnitin.com in this class for the submission of your papers. I will provide information about it to you in class. Our class ID # is 1168514 and our class password is heloise.

All cellphones & electronic communication devices must be turned off in class. Failure to do so will result in confiscation and in a recorded absence for that class.

Based on past experience, I have high expectations for the work that honors students are capable of. This class will only work if you are prepared and willing to participate. Even if you are the quiet type, in this class you are expected to do the readings and talk about them with your classmates. It will not kill you to open your mouth. The readings may take time to absorb, so plan your schedules accordingly.

Daily Schedule of Readings and Assignments: See attached calendar.
