Of course, it's impossible to cover all of British literature in one summer term--we're talking about material that ranges over 1400 years in a variety of styles, languages, and genres. So in one sense, ENGL 203 has to be a "British Lit's Greatest Hits" course. Instead of trying to read everything, we will study the major periods, literary forms, and cultural concerns that characterize British literature, with close study of representative major works and authors over the course of British literary history from Beowulf to at least Virginia Woolf (and a little beyond). Think of this as a Rhino Records version of British literature--you'll get the hits, and sometimes excerpts of the hits (no 22-minute version of Freebird here) to give you a taste of what's out there for you to discover.

Texts: The Longman Anthology of British Literature, 2nd compact edition, volumes A&B, ISBN 0-321-20787-4, available at the Bookworm or from any online bookstore (make sure you have it by the first day of summer school!) This is a 2-volume edition; you need BOTH volumes. The covers look like this:

Please note: A student may not receive credit for both ENGL 203 and ENGL 201 or 202 unless very special circumstances apply. If you are one of the students affected by the discontinuation of ENGL 201 and ENGL 202, please check with your advisor or Dr. Jones to see if a petition will be needed to ensure that the Registrar gives you credit for both classes.

The blue oval buttons in the left margin will help you navigate through this site. Please let me know if you have any difficulty with them.
