Welcome to ENGL 203, "Major British
Authors."
This is a survey of British Literature from its beginnings up to
recent times. Of course, it's impossible to cover all of
British literature in one semester--we're talking about material
that ranges over 1400 years in a variety of styles, languages,
and genres. So in one sense, ENGL 203 has to be a "British Lit's Greatest Hits" course.
Instead of trying to read everything, we will study the
major periods, literary forms, and cultural concerns
that characterize British literature, with close study of
representative major works and authors over the course of British
literary history from Beowulf to at least Virginia
Woolf (and a little beyond). Think of this as a Rhino
Records version of British literature--you'll get the hits, and
sometimes excerpts of the hits (no 22-minute version of
Freebird here) to give you a taste of what's out there for
you to discover.
