House Points Scoring Guide

On the first day of class, students will be sorted into Houses by random draw. Each House will choose a representative to be Head Boy or Head Girl, and these representatives will flip a coin to see who chooses a House Name first. House names may come from one of the four canonical Hogwarts names (Griffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff); another wizarding school name (Beauxbatons, Durmstrang); or an appropriate Winthrop name (e.g. Bancroft, Eagleclaw, etc.).

  • Each House will start with 25 points.
  • The highest-scoring House (collectively, averaged) on each quiz will earn 10 points.
  • The highest-scoring House (collectively, averaged) on the midterm will earn 25 points.
  • The highest-scoring House (averaged) on the group presentation will earn 20 points.
  • Each member of a House who visits the Writing Center for help with the research paper will earn the House 5 points (proof will be the Writing Center attendance slip stapled to the final paper).
  • Any time a House member is late for class or unprepared for class, the House will lose 5 points.
  • Any other episodes of misbehavior (e.g. but not limited to texting in class, etc.) will cost the House a minimum of 5 points per offense.
  • Dr. Koster and Ms. Harris will also assign and deduct points for work in class each day and for other instances of meritorious (or notorious) behavior.
  • Each new scholarly resource for the Resources web page will earn the suggester’s House 2 points.
  • At the end of the term, a House Cup and some small token prizes will be assigned to the team with the most House Points.
  • Additional House Points rules may be added as we go along…depending on what circumstances come up.
