Dear Dr. Koster,
For my report I propose to research and recommend strategies for
implementing a children's church project for West End Baptist
Church in Rock
Hill. I have discussed this project with Associate Pastor Larry Gregory and
believe that I can complete the report
in the time allowed.
Background West End Baptist is a growing church with a
number of young families. This means a number of small children are
brought to
church each Sunday. While the congregation strongly believes that children
should be introduced to worship at an early
age, they are concerned about the
frequent disruptions small children inevitably cause while attending adult
services (crying,
fidgeting, running around, distracting other worshippers).
Many churches in the area have considered implementing special programs
and
services for children to alleviate such problems. West End is ready to consider
such a program.
Audience Analysis Pastor Gregory is the outreach director
for the church, as well as its educational director; he will be my primary
reader. This report may also be read by the senior pastors, the outreach
and educational committees, and the church's Board of
Deacons. All of these
readers are somewhat familiar with all the aspects of the subject I am
researching, and will understand any
technical terms or ideas to which I refer.
Purpose
In a preliminary interview with Pastor
Gregory, I learned that the church's chief concerns are with cost, staffing,
facilities,
materials, and liability insurance. I will concentrate on
researching these areas in various church publications, through written requests
to insurance agents and the Southern Baptist Convention education office, and
through telephone interviews with directors of
children's church programs at
other Baptist churches in the area. (I plan an informal telephone survey of
these directors to speed
the process.) If time permits, I will try to attend one
or more of these other children's programs to observe them in practice.
Procedures and Schedule I plan to call the Baptist Churches
listed in the York County Phone Directory this week (or on the
weekend) to
determine if they have children's programs and to make appointments to call the
directors of such programs. I will also
write off for information this week.
Next week I hope to do all my interviewing; in the third week I will consolidate
my research, make
any follow-up calls that are needed, and draft my report
before making my oral presentation in class. In the fourth week, I will revise
and edit my-draft to submit it on the due date.
I welcome your comments and suggestions about my project.
Sincerely,
Christa Presley (handwritten signature in original)Christa Presley
