CITATION

Rifleman Gobar Singh Negi of the 2nd Battalion of the 39th Garhwal Rifles won the Victoria Cross for most conspicuous bravery on 10 March 1915 at Neuve Chapelle. Ten VCs were won in this battle. The first went to Rifleman Negi.

"During the British attack on a German position, he was one of a bayonet party with bombs who entered their main trench and was also the first man to go round each traverse, driving back the enemy until they were eventually forced to surrender.

"He was killed in the engagement." (London Gazette, 28 April 1915)

He was among the leading wave of the attack. As soon as the artillery barrage lifted, the battalion followed at the double, taking the fullest advantage of the crushing effect of the shelling.

London Gazette, 28 April 1915
