Part One

Work in groups of three or four people to brainstorm key concepts, terms, and details from the following authors' works:

• Yeats
• Conrad
• Joyce
• Eliot
• Woolf

Each group will share its information with the rest of the class, and we will discuss anything that is unclear to you.

***Remember that you must all review the main characteristics of the Modern Period.***

Part Two

Get back in your groups and find two quotations that you think are most likely to appear on the final examination.  Focus on the author you were assigned in part one.

Part Three

Get back in your groups again, and this time do three things:  (1) generate a list of themes in your author's work, (2) identify connections to those themes in as many of the other authors as possible, and (3) write an essay question that has the following characteristics:

• The question asks you to explain something about one of our Modern works.
• It then asks you to compare what you have just explained to (similarity) or with (difference) the other Modern works in terms of an evaluative question. 
• Generate a multiple choice essay question:  it should ask which of four choices is most or best or least in terms of some criterion.
• Your question must also include a subquestion about something from the Romantic or Victorian period.
• Your "question" should be multiple sentences.

Give me your question on a piece of paper.  I will read all of them to the class.

YOUR FINAL EXAMINATION WILL TAKE PLACE AT 3:00 P.M. IN THIS CLASSROOM ON MONDAY, MAY 2, 2005.
