Student Understandings

(1)        I understand that there are intellectual standards in this course and that I am responsible for monitoring my own learning.

(2)        I understand that the class is participatory, not merely a series of lectures.

(3)        I understand that on a typical class day I will be responsible for taking an active part in my own learning and that of my fellow students.

(4)        I understand that I will be held responsible for assessing my own work using criteria and standards discussed in class.

(5)        I understand that I am responsible for keeping track of my "grade."

(6)        I understand that if an assignment (either a reading or a written assignment) is due and I have not completed it, then I am not prepared for class.  Consequently, I may be asked to leave.  I understand that I may return to class once the assignment is completed.  In particular, on peer editing days, I will be asked to leave if I do not contribute a draft.

(7)        I understand that ALL written work must be turned in to pass the course. Not turning in one of the five major paper assignments means an automatic F for the course.

(8)        I understand that there is a cumulative final examination in this course.

(9)        I understand that the work of the course requires consistent classroom attendance and active participation

(10)      I understand that the class will not be graded on a curve and that grades will NOT be rounded up.

(11)      I understand the basis of the final grade as outlined in the syllabus.

(12)      I understand that the professor will not allow me to change my final exam time even if my parents buy me a plane ticket for holiday or summer vacation travel.

(13)      I understand that this course follows Winthrop University's attendance policy, which states that a 25% absence rate (7 absences) means an automatic F.

(14)      I understand that I have 3 "free" absences, that there will be a 2-point grade deduction for each additional absence, that 3 tardies equal an absence, and that if I come in late I must check in with the professor at the end of the class period (otherwise, my absence mark stands).

(15)      I understand that an "excused absence" does not erase the absence; it means that I have one week from my return to class to make up any missed assignment.  An absence is an absence.

(16)      If I am a Winthrop athlete, I understand that I do not receive extra free absences or privileges of any sort by virtue of my membership on an athletic team.  I must submit my work prior to my absence.
