Passage Papers

Due at the beginning of class, students will read/present their passage papers to the class, which will serve to begin our class discussions for that day.  Students will sign up for two specific texts/due dates (see Passage Paper signup) and submit their papers to me immediately after class. Papers will therefore not all be due the same class meeting.

As stated in the course syllabus, each student will be writing 2 Passage Papers during the first half of the semester.  These assignments are intended to give you an opportunity to practice close reading of our primary texts, which will in turn help develop your larger paper later in the semester.  Writing about texts in this manner will no doubt help you prepare for examinations as well.  In addition, your analyses of the texts will serve to stimulate our class discussion because you will be reading your paper out loud (great experience for conferences and other public speaking contexts).

For this particular assignment, simply choose a lengthy passage from one of the texts assigned for that specific class meeting (20-25 lines).  This may be a verse stanza, a bulky paragraph, whatever.  Your paper will simply be a brief analysis of that passage.

For each 3-page essay, begin with a brief (3 or 4 sentence) plot summary of the passage and where it occurs in the play.  Next, establish the passage's significance  as it relates to other moments in the text and / or other texts (specifically) we've discussed or are discussing (this should not be a comparison / contrast paper however).  Be sure to use specifics here; quotes are always helpful.  You might also choose to discuss the figures of speech or poetic language in the passage--as it relates to the overall plotting or thematics.

Oral Presentation Grade
While your paper will be graded for the writing, your presentation will also contribute to your Oral Presentation grade for the course.  Specifically, for the oral component of the assignment, you will be evaluated according to professionalism of your reading/presentation and your ability to answer/respond to questions from the audience (your classmates).  This is intended to approximate a real conference experience, so the more approach this assignment in a professional manner, the more successful you will be.
