However, you may not write the entire essay beforehand and merely copy it into your blue book. You must write the essay in class.

Other considerations:

1. Take advantage of your two-week preparation time.

2. Much of your preparation will be in deciding HOW to present this material to your readers, that is, in formulating your thesis statement. What is your purpose in this explanatory synthesis? What controlling idea is most important for your readers to know? Students can respond to these questions in several ways, and each of the students would be handling the assignment appropriately.

3. Remember to organize your essay according to IDEAS, not according to source.

4. Remember that your attitude toward your material is OBJECTIVE, rather than subjective.

5. Be sure that you handle all sources correctly, according to CUBI.

6. Prepare your Works Cited page before class.

7. Be very careful to fulfill the basic requirements of the assignment. Essays that do not meet length and/or source requirements will earn failing grades.

8. Review the Writing/English Rubric for evaluation standards.

9. Because this assignment is an in-class writing, there will be no opportunity for revision.

10. This assignment is worth 15% of your final grade.
