Paper Two Assignment

The Self and Nature

Due Date: 2/26

Our next unit deals with the self and nature.  As you read these articles, think about the role nature has played in your own life and the ways in which you have interacted with nature.  Ask yourself how you define what “nature” is.  How does society define “nature”?  What do we owe to nature?  To what extent are humans a part of nature?

With these ideas as a starting point, choose one of the topics suggested below and develop a unified (clear thesis) and coherent (clear connections among the parts) paper of 3-5 pages (double spaced, 12 point font) in which you clearly take a stand on one side or the other.  Be sure to offer valid arguments not only for your side but also against the main points for the other side.  This means you have to look objectively at both sides of the issue before you begin.  Your argument should be mature and logical (no emotion or unsupported opinions), and your supporting evidence should be convincing—many specific examples and details

Include ideas, either quoted or paraphrased, from at least THREE (preferably more) of our reading assignments.  You may also wish to find your own outside sources; if so, please make a copy of them to turn in with your paper.  Be sure to quote, summarize, and paraphrase according to MLA standards and formatting.

Suggested topics:

  1. Are science, particularly biology, and religion always at odds with each other?  Do we have to pick one over the other?
  2. What are the strongest "blocks" (see Bohm's "On Communication") that exist on either side of the science/ religion debate?  Form an opinionated thesis statement about them, such as how we might deal with them or how (specifically) they hinder forward progress in the ongoing discussion about science and religion.
  3. Choose one specific ability or skill you have (singing, memorizing, etc.) and prove whether nature (genes) or nurture (experience) had more to do with shaping that skill in you.
  4. What do you see as humankind’s responsibility to nature?  Choose one specific environmental problem, think about what should be done to solve or alleviate it, and persuade you reader to be part of the solution you suggest. (This will take some outside research.)
  5. In what ways should a college education foster an understanding of and a responsible attitude towards nature?  Or is college not where this type of education should be taking place?  Where else?
